Brothers and sisters,

On 7 October, we will celebrate the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary. On this day, the Word of God leads us to the heart of Christian prayer, where, after the Ascension of the Lord, the community of the Apostles gathers in the Upper Room to pray persistently and with one accord together with the Virgin Mary, Mother of our Lord Jesus Christ (Acts 1:14). On this day, therefore, we are presented with the image of the praying Church: a community that waits, that trusts, that prays together with the Virgin Mary.

In the Gospel of Luke, the words of the angel’s announcement are heard once more: “Hail, Mary, full of grace! The Lord be with you.”

The Virgin Mary welcomes the mystery with faith, even though she does not fully understand its meaning. Her ‘Fiat’ is an expression of trust in the fulfilment of salvation. And this month we can join Mary in her trust, for the Rosary is, after all, a school of trust, listening, silence and meditation in the company of Mary, the disciple of the Son of God.

V měsíci září slavíme slavnost posvěcení našeho farního kostela. Možná si řeknete, proč ale slavíme tuto slavnost? Čím je tato stavba tak výjimečná?

Abychom pochopili výjimečnost dnešní slavnosti, je potřeba si připomenout několik základních faktů: Kanonické právo definuje kostel těmito slovy:

„Kostelem se rozumí posvátná budova určená pro bohoslužbu, do níž jsou věřící oprávněni přijít, aby zde konali bohoslužbu“ (kán. 1214).

Dnešní slavnost je tedy slavností veliké výjimečnosti, protože se týká každého z nás. Je totiž slavností všech těch, kteří se zde shromažďují ve jménu Božího Syna, aby přinášeli Bohu chvály a díkůčinění. Katechismus Katolické Církve to vyjadřuje slovy:

„Viditelné kostely nejsou prostá místa setkání, ale znamení a ukazují církev žijící v tomto místě. Ukazují přebývání Boha mezi smířenými a s Kristem spojenými“ (KKC 1180).

Brothers and sisters!

On the feast of Blessed Hroznata, we find in Psalm 34 a song of thanksgiving from a person who is aware of the workings of God’s power, which has delivered him from tribulation and danger. This deliverance becomes a source of hope for all who have humble and God-fearing hearts, for all who hope in His mercy and love.

„The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him, and he saves them.“

This eighth verse speaks of God’s messenger—referred to in the Czech (and English) translation as an angel—who has been entrusted by God with the task of protecting the faithful, in the words of the psalm— „those who fear the Lord“.
